If your dog is barking excessively, he most likely has built up nervous engergy. Without knowing your dog's temperment or habits, I would guess that there are 2 basic causes of this nervous engergy barking. The first issue is usually that the dog is bored and needs more exercise or at least more of a challenge. If you are taking him on a 1 hour walk every day, make sure that you vary the path you walk with him. If he is overly energetic, then try running or frisbee with him. The other issue is that he probably does not see you as the pack leader in his pack. This would cause him to have some anxiety or nervous energy. Make sure that when your friends visit you have him on a leash and put him in a sit command immediately. If he starts to bark, tell him "no" or "shh" right away. Give him a quick tug on the leash while you give him the "no" command. Make sure that you do not just pull his leash the whole time, but make it a short little tug and then relax. Do not let your friends interact with him when they first enter the house, they should just walk in and greet you. However, you have to be consistent about correcting him everytime that he starts to bark. After a while, he should start to understand that you are in control and he can just relax, once this happens make sure that you praise the good behavior. You have to have a Calm Assertive Energy when taking on the role of the pack leader.
There is a lot of great info on the dogpsychologycenter.com website. This is all stuff that I picked up from the website and the tv show by Cesar Millan, The Dog Whisperer. A lot of it has worked for my dog, hopefully it will work for your dog as well!
