I've heard it's something to do with lack of calcium, is that right?

My friend's nails are pretty much covered with these marks... would it be cause for concern?

Calcium deficiency is one explanation but not the right one, usually just damage caused over time

The calcium lack story is bunkum that has been around since I was a kid!

The condition is called leukonychia, which of course means white nails. It is often due to trauma, often self inflicted, such as chewing the nail edges. It can also occur in patients on certain drugs, or subjected to certain poisons or toxins, so what your friend works at might be important. Occasionally it is caused by zinc deficiency.

Your friend should see his GP and get one or two blood tests including serum zinc levels.

Its caused by a mild deficiency in zinc. Not a real cause for concern just take zinc supplement and the white mark will grow out with the nail..

well you are right, it is caused by a lack of calcium. Your friend shouldn't be concerned but she could be diffecent and get diseased. I would reccomend drinking milk or juice with calcium.

Hi

its amyth that these white marks are associated with calcium deficiany. they are actually caused by damage to the nail itself probably at the bed when they are developing.

has nothing to do with diet or calcium it is about damage to the nail bed or matrix, if it is on all her nails the possibly she has been a bit heavy handed or maybe her job involves something that could damage her hands or nails because if it is affecting them all then she must be quite rough with herself. Sometimes nails are more sensitive, so if she's been on medication or been very ill recently it would be easier for her to damage them as they are at a sensitive stage.

It is NOT as simple as the nurse above me says, her iron levels could well be low, like i said from an illness etc but it will not be just that. I have worked as a nail technician for over 10years and seen all sorts, plus have worked with a lot models etc who have been following very bad diets so trust my word.

if you're on about the half moon white shape on your nails that means you have enough calcium in your body
the time to worry is when you have'nt got any half moons

I'm a nurse it is a iron deficiency. It is caused by a lack of circulation in the body/bloodstream. Take care.
