Any chemical put on hair does some damage, however, if it is done professionally or if a home pern, follow the directions completely, damage can be miminal. You must condition your hair after every shampoo to help keep it in excellent condition. Talk to people who have their hair permed and ask how they like it and where they had it done.

"How Do Hair Perms Work? Perming is a chemical process of changing the shape of hair, so that the new style is retained through several washes.Perming can be achieved either by a cold process or by a hot process.
What Can Go Wrong With A Perm? A number of factors combine to make the perm successful; the correct strength of the lotion, the curler size, the degree of tension with which the hair is wound around the curlers, and the development time.Things can go wrong with any of these and spoil the perm. With small curlers and too much tension on the hair, the hair might look frizzy.Similarly with too long a development time the curl becomes too tight. With a short developement time and larger curlers the perm is loose.
Damage to the hair is another problem with perming; this occurs most often in the hiar which is already damaged by dying.Even in normal hair, too prolonged an application or too strong a lotion may cause damage.
How Often Can You Perm Your Hair? This depends on the condition of your hair. Some damage does take place during perming and this is more so if the hair has been dyed earlier and it is therefore better to avoid re-perming your hair earlier than 4-5 months.
Can Curly Hair Be Straightened> Yes, hair can be straightened just as it can be curled. This is done either by using chemicals or heat." This is from the website on the source...not my own words I hope it was what you were looking for!

I have the real answer...this is my best kept secret..I perm my at least 4 times a year...after you perm your hair do this

Get some molasses and pour it on your head. Be sure to have some apple cidar vinegar handy as you will need it to get this stuff out

it is a real mess. I put tissue paper all around my forehead and my neck because in time the molasses heats up and starts to run down your neck and forehead

what a perm does is it breaks down the sugar content in the hair and this is what makes it brittle and frizzy. you leave this stuff as long as you can stand it..usually 20 minutes to an hour

Myself, I wrap my head in saran wrap, and then wrap that in tin foil, and then put an old towl over that and another one around my shoulders.

Then I go hide somewhere. When you take it off you fill the sink with water and pour the vinegar over your head and let it run into the sink so you can dunk your head in it several times.

This is quite a process but you will not believe the results...Your curly locks willl be tamed and soft again...repeat if necessary, usually you dont have to

Perms slowly break apart the hair.

It doesn't matter if it is dyed or anything, it still does it if it is your natural hair.

Perming your hair once a year isn't too bad. Most perms last 6 months, so you would probably need to get it 2 times a year.

Good Luck!

once a year is fine. it does make your hair dry and can make it brittle if the solution is left on too long
