Get to? We'll see if you say that after you've been there.

The answer is: Yes, officers serve in combat. They are the leaders on the ground. The decision makers. The liaison between their men and the command staff. You cannot perform these duties without being on the ground and fighting along side of your men. You cannot gain their respect without subjecting yourself to the same dangers and efforts that they do. In a combat zone, officers are a "high priority" target. To take away the units leadership makes them much less efficient.

I would say that smart officers and smart NCOs learn how to work as a leadership team. Officers and NCOs both have vital roles in military units.

Captains and lieutenants are COMPANY grade officers and are more often found with the troops. FIELD grade officers are more senior officers like majors and colonels. By the time you are a field grade officer you have probably spent your time with the troops and are in a senior leadership position or on a staff.

So, yes. Expect for captains and lieutenants to be in the action.

Only field-grade officers are on the front lines (2nd and 1st Lieutenants.) The rest are basically in the rear with the gear (aka Captains and up.)

They all lead from the front, but if they are smart (hard to do for butter bar lieutenants ;P) they pay close attention to what their sergeants say.
