All of my friends smoke so when there is a party I either have to stay inside alone or go outside and inhale smoke to hang out with anyone. It's really frustrating and I just feel ignored and disrespected. I have no desire to smoke and my friends know this. It's not fair that to be friends with them I have to put my health at risk. What do I do?

I am a smoker and when I have people over who don't smoke I try to respect that and take the needed actions to make them feel comfortable and that includes going out of my own home to smoke.
Just because I am a smoker doesn't mean I don't find some parties and gatherings to be TOO smoky at which point I have to decide if I want to continue to be around it or not.
I applaud you and your not smoking. I am trying to quit myself and it's HARD. But don't let the smokers in your life make your life miserable and don't let them persuade you to pick them up. . . NEVER/EVER! ! ! !
You have to put yourself first and if you can't be around the smoke and don't want to be around the smoke. . DON'T.

I have read alot of the other answers to your question and man there's some really @#(&$) answers "they won't miss you". . . man that's just mean!
I had a drinking problem and I had to quit and start going to AA. . glad I did. . . but it was MY decision to quit drinking, not my friends and to expect them to not drink when they were around me is like making my decision their decision and that's not right.
I can't change the world to fit me,I have to change me to fit the world. . . Living life on life's terms, not my terms. This is reality.
I miss some of my drinking buddies and but can still hang with some of them. . .after I got strong enough to leave the booze alone regardless of whether they drink or not.
People can be your friends, they are just friends with a nasty habit and just as I do with my drinking friends. . . some of them I can be around and some I can't . . . just a fact of life and you can't expect them to accomodate you.
As their friend as I am my friend's friend I either accept them as they are or I move on.
TOUGH decision but you might actually have to find new friends and I know there are ALOT of good non-smokers out there.

Good Luck

unless you party with you friends 24/7 and they all chain smoke. You'll be OK. By what you write your not a very good friend, you won't be missed by them if you stop going to parties with them. Find people you like to call "friends", and party with them. Remember though...no booze, no trans fats,no raw egg yolks. Limit the parties to diet soda, flavored water, fruit and vegetable trays and lots of exercise. after all you don't want to put your health at risk.

Your friends have chosen their lifestyle ( a bad one unfortunately) but it is theirs and nagging won't change anything.
You need to start going places and to activities where the non-smokers go.
Only new friends will resolve this problem . . .
It is total fantasy to think they will not smoke when you are around.

Be loud and proud , my friend...and don't join them just to join in! They will eventually get the hint, especialy if someone they are close to gets lung cancer and dies...they will experience this first hand. They can't be such good friends to leave you all by yourself at a party just to go out and contaminate their lungs. I'd find some new friends who are non-smokers! ...and Good for you!

Wear a gas/fume respirator; these are available at most hardware stores, home centers, and paint stores. The respirator should be for VOC use. 3M makes several good ones with replaceable filters.

Tell them what you think, if theyre really good friends they should have the respect to not light up around you. Be really proud you're the only one without the disgusting habit!

If there true friends then ask them to please restrain from smoking around you. True friends would do that. I have non-smoker friends and that's what I do.
