I know nothing about Promaster. It is one of those brands where they probably buy up other manufacturers' surpluss and second quality lenses and relabel them. If you like your lens, then go for it.
In the limited Sony line, I think I would choose the Sony 16-80mm f/3.5-4.5 Vario-Sonnar T* DT a (Alpha) Mount Digital SLR 5x Zoom Lens with Hood, by Carl Zeiss. The range is good for almost any situation you would encounter in a wedding and, betting on the Zeiss reputation, I would expect good results without color shift or major distortion. Of course, it costs $700, but you want the best. If you can't quite zoom in on the bride's baby blue eyes, just do the best you can do and crop for the tight shots. You have 10 MP to play with and this is where it makes a difference.
Now... Have you considered hiring a photographer for the wedding? Doesn't the father of the bride have enough to do or think about on such an important day? Shouldn't you be included in a certain number of the pictures anyway??? Don't spend the money on a new lens. Spend it on a photographer.

While a 28-300 Promaster is a decent all around lens (manufactured by Tamron), It is not ideal for low light, no flash situations.
If you can use your flash (not the pop up, an external flash - if you don't have one go get one) with your lens and you'll do ok.
If your not allowed to use your flash, go buy a 50mm f1.7 (Used <$60 or so) and just get close.

Let the pro worry about getting the pictures - bring the Sony only if you must.
If you want to use the occasion as a pretext to start building a nice lens collection... may I suggest the Tamron 17-50mm for in close ($450), or the (hard to find) Sigma 70-200mm / Tokina 80-200mm for shooting from a distance.
All of these lenses perform magnificently in low light, and provide much better image quality than your 28-300mm.
