The helmet did hold the communication mike and earphones but from a safety standpoint it was more like the helmet was wearing the pilot. Later on the helmets get togeather and say "it's a good thing that Jap broke my fall or I would have really hit the ground hard"

It amazes me the responses to some of the questions posted here....

The helmet contained the radio headphones for communication with their launch base to aid in directing them to their targets.

The Kamikaze (Divine Wind) was an act of heroism as defined in the Bushido code. Their was nothing cowardly about it in the eyes of those summoned to their destiny.

We in the west often have a difficult time with this concept, as we put a different value on life. To the Japanese military, the Bushido Code is what led Japan for Centuries.

Keeping in mind, the Kamikaze accounted for over 300 U.S. Naval ships being sunk, the strategy had an element of success.

How do you know if they did? Because they had their photos taken with helmets it doesn't mean they wore them on the missions.

Because their commanders felt that if anyone of them chickens out at the last minute and try to press the brakes they probably jerk forward with the helmet on and probably cause at least nominal damage with the steel helmet.
Or it could be fashion statement of that time.

because the helmets held the oxygen apparatus's needed for them to breath at higher altitudes, they wanted to make it to there target so they protected the pilots enough to do the job

because to be a kamikazee pilot u must be special like SPECIAL ED and special people wear helmets lol :)
