According to the Old Testament Chronology in my NIV Study Bible, the Israelites left Egypt and crossed the Red Sea (actually it was the Sea of Reeds) circa 1446 B.C. They then wandered in the wilderness till circa 1406, after Moses died and Joshua was appointed as their leader, then they entered the land of Canaan. So that's 40 years.

A more interesting question would be WHY did they have to wander in the wilderness for 40 years when it would have taken them not even 4 years to get from Egypt to Cannan.

The Bible is clear that God considers 40 days a spiritual significant time period. Whenever God wanted to prepare someone for his purposes, he took 40 days.

Perhaps the 40 years was a big transformation since, none of the people that started was left to cross into the promise land.

I believe 40 years after they left Egypt, they wandered around looking for the promised land.

It took them two years to get to Kedesh-Barnea, then while there they were senteced to stay there for another thirty eight years. In the 40th year they left and got into the Land of Israel, so, fourty years. (The 40 is significant because in the bible fourty days often signifies a period of cleansing, and 40 years makes one year for each day the spies were in Cannan, the sin for which Israel was punished)
