I am thinking of something in the Santa Monica area. Is this a safe place with lots of ammenities? How much would a 2 bedroom apartment be to rent per month?

Are there any other areas you would recommend? I want to stay away from gangs/violence and although I will have a car, would also like to be able to walk places.

Sorry, but ther is NO place in LA that's gang-free!
Santa Monica is a good place to live, if you have the $1800-$2500 per month for a 2 bedroom apartment in the part of town that's the safest and within walking disance from entertainment and the beach.
West Hollywood is also great. It's a gay community, though, if that bothers you.
South Pasadena is also very convenient; close to downtown LA and Pasadena.

Put in West Los Angeles YMCA in yellow pages that area north & West from there is great. I lived near University High school & worked @ the Y for 8 years still have family that lives there. Check Rent.com you get $$ if you rent from one of there apartments. Santa Monica is over priced & as one person said full of weird homeless people! In West LA you can find a 2 bedroom for about 1200-2000 a month. Also check out Park LA Brea in LA

There are gangs everywhere! You just have to be careful and keep your eyes open.
The San Fernando Valley is a great place to live.
Sherman Oaks, Studio City, Tarzana, Encino - they are all within 20 minutes of downtown, 30 minutes from beach and is very nice family areas with lots of shopping, entertainment.
A 2 bedroom apartment would be close to $1000.00 per month.

The beach areas (minus Venice) are pretty safe - Santa Monica, Palisades, Marina del Rey, Playa del Rey, etc. If you are looking for a good balance of safety with ammenities, Santa Momica is the way to go.

Dont move to the valley, though. That is just wrong.

These are some areas that are a little further out, but have cleaner air, easy access to the beach, and awesome parks for hiking- best of all- no gangs! Calabasas, Agoura Hills, parts of Woodland Hills, and Westlake Village.
