I'm pretty sure you don't understand the meaning of "self-evident truths". The only real self-evident truth is often considered to be "I am conscious". There is little else we can logically find self-evident. There are a few widely held additions to the above, but the "Bible's spiritual authority" is not one of them. You are using a logical fallacy here.

It is, in fact, quite fair to demand evidence for any claim that is not self-evident, which covers a whole lot of ground. Evolution was not widely believed at first. It was only when study after study and experiment after experiment showed it to be viable that beliefs changed.

I'm sure if you could provide concrete evidence (real, physical evidence) of the Bible's spiritual authority - something like choirs of angels actually appearing before the general public, pronouncing God's truths - atheists would eventually change their beliefs.

Because a spirit is not evidence! What spiritual authority are you referring to? The fact that the bible has been changed throughout the years? The fact that it has been re-written in so many different languages that it is a far cry from it's alleged "original" version. Or I know, the fact the Old Testament makes it okay to have several wives and practice incest? Or maybe that it is okay to kill thousand in battle in the name of God? Hmmm. Were those the self-evident truths you were speaking of?

It is only self-evident in the same way it is self-evident to a decompensating schizophrenic that he must wear a tinfoil hat so the people can't read his thoughts.

In other words, it isn't self evident unless you are already a believer. So it is a circular argument, as you can't use the bible to be it's own reference for its "reliability" or authority.

Here is a typical conversation with a believer

Atheist: How do you know the bible is true?
Believer: Because it is the inspired word of God
Atheist: But how do you know it is the word of God?
Believer: Because it says so in the bible.
Atheist: But...how do you know the bible is true? Wait a minute, we've done this part already.

Self evident in who's opinion? The Bibles "spiritual authority" comes from people who say it has spiritual authority, not from external supporting evidence. In other words what you are saying is that the bible is true because the bible itself says it's true.

Church lady...thought you obvisously are not a Christian and you are known to only SNL fans...there is no such word "athelutionists"...you made it up.

And just to be even more picky here...there is no self-evident truth of the Bible's spiritual authority and you know that.

what is an "athelutionist"?

And the problem with the Bible is that it's spiritual authority comes from ... the Bible. A little too "self-evident" for most of us.

Self evident truths in a 2000 year old scripture of largely unknown authorship? Have you been at the Gin madam?

Evolutionists and athiests are two different things. Please do not insult people with your 'cute' play on words.
You want me to believe in a book with unknown authors from 2000+ years ago that says some guy waved a hand and *poof* the universe was created.
Sorry, a little too fairy tale-ish for me.

Atheists always say they want evidence before they would believe in or ever think about following God. The problem is not the intelectual affirmation of God in their minds, but the absence of faith in their hearts. God proves himself to those who have faith. All the others will never know Gods power without faith.
