Sick birds balance can be very shaky and it's much beter for them if they stay low to the ground. Take his perches away so that he's less likely to injure himself by falling (although it's hard to keep him off the sides of the cage if he really wants to be up) and make sure he has food and water dishes on the floor of the cage. If there's a grid on the bottom of the cage and you can take it out, do that so that he's more comfortable. If you have any millet (or another healthy treat that he likes) and you want to give him a little more encouragement to stay on the ground put some of that on the floor for him too.

Then, I highly suggest calling a vet today if you can (although it's sunday so one may not be available until tomorrow) and asking him for further advice. It's VERY important not to take sick birds for granted, because sometimes they don't show any signs that they aren't feeling well until something is really wrong. Pay special attention to him today and pet or talk to him lots if he wants you to. I hope everything goes well, although your bird is getting very old. I don't know if you've owned him this whole time or not, but congratulations on the fact that you've taken such good care of him that he's been able to live such a long life.

Good luck!

You can take the perch out or put it very close to the floor. Provide food and water that it can get to easily, and make sure it is kept warm.

If it is a stroke it may recover some over time.

Your bird is quite old so it might be old age.

A vet may be able to help more, although my experiance with birds and vets is not good.

Wow 18 years that is fantastic you have been a great mom to this wonderful species of bird. He may return to health with a bit of help see http://www.letstalkbirds.com/cockatiels.htm and then take him to the vet ASAP. Good luck

Most of us aren't doctors or vet so we aren't in a position to diagnose or treat your pet. You should approach your local veterinarian about this.

Please, take your bird to an emergency vet or an avian vet ASAP! If you don't have one, look one up here http://aav.org/vet-lookup/
