I want to design a plate of variable thickness and complex shape to withstand bending in two directions; what finite element analysis software do you recommend and why?
Please understand that I am old and need a really hand-holding type of help.
Any help or advice is appreciated.

Hi,
First i wanna tell you that, the FEA software's are too costly and if you are using any software's to design the plate, choose the FEA package, which is compatible with your existing software, because the data exchange between these software's will eat up your time. From your question i understand that your going to design a sheet-metal plate, we have many FEA packages in the market to analyze the bending stress, strain, displacement and the volumetric shear of plates. You can choose any of these software's, Pro/Mechanica, Ansys, Ideas, Nastran, Abaqus, etc.
