have a look on the website of your local constabulary. then look under recruitment and I'm sure you will find vacancies for PCSO's.

becuase they're still quite new they're often recruiting.

PCSO's are policing on the cheap, they have no more powers of arrest than the member of public on the street, they are there to be seen and not heard.
If you want to be a police officer go for the whole way and become a constable, I know there is a long waiting list for a lot of forces at the moment, and if you want to become a PCSO whilst you are waiting then go ahead but just keep your main goal in sight.

well that all depends on exactly what your talking about. If you mean a community liasion or like a crime watch officer you have to start at the bottom..go to the police academy, get thru your field training and then if your eligible you can put in for the position..You dont just start out in a position like that..the things that most people dont understand is that everyone starts out as a patrolman on the street running a district..then you are tranferred at your request or promoted to specialty positions...

Ha Ha....You want to be a 'Walking Scarecrow"? Do something that will actually help the British people instead of helping the British government deliver political 'policing' on the cheap. Help out at a charity or something.

i'd like to correct some peoples' mistaken beliefs regarding PCSO's and their powers.
If you apply to a proactive force then you will be given most of the following powers:
Power to detain on suspicion (virtually the same as a police officer's power of arrest)
Power to search for and confiscate alcohol
Power to search for prohibited articles
Power to stop traffic
Power to issued fines for minor offences
Power to disperse groups
Power to seize nuisance vehicles
Power to enforce cordens
Powers in relation to anti-terror laws
And god knows how many lesser used ones. The PCSO's in my area are hardly walking scarecrows, they deal with complaints quickly, they remove the yobs that blight our streets, and if one of them has the cheek to answer them back they get detained and carted away. Crime in our areas is down a huge amount, thanks to the PCSO's and PC's working together. It might not seem like they have many powers, but the ones they do have are enough to deal with the problems most people face.

Walk into your local Police Station and ask, they'll be able to point you in the right direction.
