There are compact digital camera and there are DSLR type of camera.compact cameras has a build in flash while most of DSLR cameras like cameras made from Canon or nikon used a seperate flash,it all depends on what you are about to shoot,if you want that special effect (pictures taken outside at night time) then you won't have to use a flash as long as you set the appenture settings both the f-stop and the shutter speed, and your picture will stand out. and if you would take pictures indoor, a seperate flash would do the trick to get a good quality pictures, but you will have to make sure that the flash is not being shoot at directly at shiny surface or a mirror or else the flash light will just bounce back.make sure if shoot it on an angle.

All answers above me are correct, especially the ones who say that they ALLOW you to take better pictures if you know how to use them. The separate flash units are generally much high power and this lets you aim them in different directions or use a diffuser to keep from making those crisp and clear dark shadows that encircle your subject like a dark halo. Also, even though there is more light output, the flash is not so clse to dead center with the lens and there is less chance of getting red-eye.

Usually the ability to have your flash separate from the camera will give you better results, but it also depends on the quality of the camera and lens.

High end flashes allow you to bounce the light off a white ceiling or wall to make the harsh flash softer. The farther away from the lens the flash is, the less likely you are to get red-eye in your shots.

Separate flash allows you to light your subject from a different angle, doesn't necessarily make you a better photographer.
