I live in Santa Paula, it's a small town about 20 minuites away. There are lots of things to do. You have the beach, you have Ventura and Santa Barbara is only an hour away. In Ventura County there is always something to do. You can even hike into the Sespe Mtns. to the Punch Bowls, just ask any Ventura County local. Also there is an annual air show @ Pt. Mugu, which is always so fun, then there's Seabee Days around Sept. or is that Navy Days either or you'll love Ventura Country and Port Hueneme. Also the base is really nice too.

I've never been there, but here's a link to the naval base website that might be helpful:

Been checking, but haven't heard anything positive about Port Hueneme, other than that it has a nice beach with a pier, sandwiched in between the naval base and a power plant. There is a golf course, and at least three museums. There's also a light house. You may have to go to Ventura to see a movie.

Carpinteria is fairly nearby, and it sounds like a livelier place if you need to get out and have fun. It's towards Santa Barbara. San Luis Obispo is a college town, old style. Sort of slow and sleepy.

We've only visited there -- I assume you know it's home to the SeaBees. But the area is nice and the beach is very close by. It's close to Ventura & S. of Carpenteria. They have a fairly large NEX -- we were there for the NEX and the gas station after a visit to Channel Islands NP so we didn't stay long.

Sorry can't help with particulars about the base! But hey you could always be stationed at Fort Irwin where we are -- going to Ventura to see a movie is a piece of cake compared to a 35 mile drive to Barstow! There's always things to complain about but there's always good things too.
