Slavery became something that "anybody" did and on the on the spot and position wasn't seen inherently incorrect - do no longer ignore that even the Bible condones slavery and gadgets guidelines for a way slaves are to be treated. so as abhorrent as we view slavery right this moment, i imagine it truly is accessible that "type" slave vendors - i'm sorry because i'm particular that even the concept of type slave vendors could be offensive to some - yet I do imagine that those who taken care of their slaves as family members and cared for them properly may be shown compassion by technique of God. (i do not count number on heaven or hell, yet I do have self belief that your soul has a diverse high quality of existence contained in the subsequent global in line along with your moves the following.) we could be very careful about judging human beings in a thoroughly diverse time and/or position by technique of modern criteria. we are able to't be particular that we'd have acted otherwise, besides the undeniable fact that comforting it will be to imagine that we'd have. Cultural and social norms were shown to be particularly efficient, a lot more suitable efficient than maximum individuals have self belief, and the sorrowful truth is that if lets been in Germany in the course of the Holocaust, medical study means that the vast majority individuals could have accomplished little or no longer something to help the Jews.

Well, let's look at this in a logical way:

Did the people who believed that they were doing the right thing during the Spanish Inquisition go to Heaven?

Did the Salem Executioners go to Heaven?

Point is, that what society MAKES you do, and what is today looked at as bad are not the same. The most wars in history were caused by the original Popes. Did they go to heaven?
Those Popes were appointed by an Italian hierarchy back then, and was corrupt as all hell.

If there is a God, I don't think he can personally fault someone who is doing what they were brought up believing, just like you can't be faulted by doing things that society today tells you is correct.

It wasn't based on that, so there's no way of knowing. Actually, I'm not sure that owning slaves was sinful. The Bible eventually discouraged slavery, but it assumes it during the OT and the NT.

Yes, owning a slave is not the unpardonable sin. I believe that slavery is wrong, but it was socially acceptable back then.

It is arrogant to assume that their religion was the reason this (slavery) was done. You can find many examples in history where Christians freed their slaves.
