I found some eggs. I am not sure if I should eat them.

Afresh egg will sink - as the egg ages the shell lets in air making a 'balloon' within the egg causing it to float.

Here's how to tell if eggs are fresh;

1. Fill a deep bowl or pan with enough cold tap water to cover an egg.
2. Place the egg in the water.
3. If the egg lies on its side on the bottom, the air cell within is small and it's very fresh.
4. If the egg stands up and bobs on the bottom, the air cell is larger and it isn't quite as fresh.
5. If the egg floats on the surface, it it should be discarded.
6. A very fresh egg out of the shell will have an overall thick white which doesn't spread much and the yolk will stand up.
Also, Grade AA eggs are the highest grade available. They cost more than other grades, but may be a good choice because of their high quality and longer shelf life.

A really fresh egg will sink almost entirely, although the wide end will probably bob toward the surface. A slightly older egg will bob with the wide end up, but only a little of the egg will break the surface of the water. An old, unusable egg will float, again with the wide end up, but there will be alot of egg breaking the surface of the water.

An eggshell is gas-permeable, and over time the membrane of the egg (lining the shell) will shrink away from the shell. That results in more air, and less egg, inside the shell.

Really, the best way to check if your eggs are OK to use is to crack them open, ONE AT A TIME, into a small bowl. If the egg looks/smells OK, then add it to your recipe. Repeat the process with each egg, individually...you don't want to crack the one "bad egg" into your recipe, and ruin the whole thing.

By the way, if you follow this procedure and you DO find a bad egg, don't worry, you'll know it!

Floating an egg in plain (not salted) water will let you gauge the size of the air-cell at the large end of the egg, which indicates the egg’s age. A fresh egg will settle to the bottom of the container and rest horizontally because the air cell is still small. The larger air cell of a 1-week old egg will cause the large end of the egg to rise up slightly. An egg that’s 2-3 weeks old will settle to the bottom of the container vertically, large end up. A very old egg will just plain float on the surface. (We don’t recommend eating any eggs that float.)

I should sink when eggs get old they fill with gas causing them to spoil if the egg stands on end in a glass of water its getting old and its so so but if it sits flat on the bottom its good to eat if it floats at all its rotten

sink, i think, but the real question is - do you want to eat food that you're not sure about? the best way to tell if an egg is fresh is to crack one open. the yolk should stay pretty firm and intact. the white should not be very watery - it may even have a firm texture if the egg is very fresh. of course there is always the sniff test too.

They should sink. Air gets into the shell through permeation and as it gets older and more addled, the more it will float. I have tried to eat an addled egg once - my cousin has a mental illness and insisted that I had a boiled egg with him and even he agreed that it was not very nice!

It should sink. The build up of gases from the egg slowly maturing/going off means the more gas it has, the more it floats.

I'm not sure but i think fresh eggs are suppose to sink in water but i could be wrong

eggs will sink
to test for freshness: crack open the egg and slide it onto a plate or other flat dish / pan ..... if the yolk stays rounded and the white stays within a circle around the yolk, it is fresh; if the yolk is flattened out and wrinkled, and the white is watery, then it is not fresh ...... also, if it smells rotten, it is!!!! It smells like sulphur, if you happen to know that odor ... in any case, best of luck...

p.s. I would not eat them if the shell is cracked or pierced ... simply throw them away and have something you know is safe to eat
