To keep your settings be sure to use the "apply" button after you set this to keep from losing your setting....

When your computer runs low on physical memory, thats what your ram is, physical memory, it can use a portion of the disk to write extra memory to, this is called virtual memory.
Here is how to increase your virtual memory.

Right click my computer, and click properties.
Click the "advanced" tab, where you see performance, click "settings". Now click the "change" button under virtual memory.
Select "custom", in the box for "initial size", enter the number 1500, then in the "maximum size", enter the number 2000.
Click "set". Click "ok" to close the box. Now click "apply" then ok to close that window, and now you have up to 2 gig's of virtual memory....

leave them alone and let windows decide your memory allocations. Click start - then control panel - then performance and maintenance - then system - then advanced . and go from there. Unless you have one huge program windows does a great job of managing virtual memory.
