A dog is great idea, unless the intruder has a gun. A baseball bat is also a great idea, unless the intruder has a gun.

Always assume the intruder has a gun.

If you and everyone in your house know how to shoot, get a .45, .357, or a 9mm handgun. If anyone in your house is not proficient with a gun, PRACTICE.
If you are too lazy to spend the time learning to use a gun properly, or if you suffer from Parkinson's Disease or really bad arthritis, get a 12 gauge shotgun with the shortest barrel allowed in your state; point it in the general direction of the bastard, close your eyes, and squeeze the trigger. One shot will do it.

The best weapon is your mind. If one or more people are going to somehow invade you home, one would think they already had a plan. So in advance if you had a plan to take action instead of reaction then you would have a better chance of defense. My plan would include getting my family out of the house as quickly and quietly as possible. The problem with projectile weapons is that the bullets don't care where they land. Two people (the intruder and the home defender) shooting weapons in a panic situation may end up shooting more than each other. My main concern would be the safety of my family not my home or my ego. When safely away call law enforcement, they are trained professionals to deal with such a situation. By personal choice I would never want to be put in a situation in my home where I would have to make the choice of taking someones life for the safety of my family. But my familys safety would come first. Secure your home well and have a plan. Of course a security system in ones home would be an asset also.

The best weapon for home security is your intelligence as an owner. Sometimes a "weapon" is not the best thing - if you ever have to use it you open allot of issues.
1. Children & accidents
2. An intruder taking it from you
3. You not being able to actually use it
4. You not knwing enough about it
5. It being a "false sence of security"

Sometimes other things are better options.
1. Security gates or bars
2. Dogs
3. Alarms
4. Safes & other devices to secure valuable belongings
5. Neighbors/watch programs
6. Not advertising that you just got new $ stuff (don't leave a big box advertising your new tv out on the street)

But if you still want a "weapon" in the house - my father-in-law (a retired Chicago police commander/detective) recommends a shotgun. He says that it is scary, and does the job - and if you actually have to use it, you don't have to concentrate to aim it (under stress most people can't aim).

But be sure to keep the gun & ammo out of reach of children - you don't want that tradgey on your hands.

Do your homework - and be safe!

This all depends on your knowledge and ability with weapons, and you the person. If you are the nervous type with little to no experience with firearms, it may be best not to have one at all. You are likely to have the weapon taken away from you, and used against you.If you must have a handgun, get one in a caliber no less than .38 special. In semi-autos, nothing less than 9mm.

Whatenver weapon you buy, the main thing is to get proficient with it. You can't realistically expect to be able to use the weapon effectively, if you don't practice with it.

Anytime you own a weapon and use it in self defense, you must be willing to taking a human life if it means your life, or the perpetrator's. If you are not willing to accept this, don't get a gun.

One last thing. Just because you are cleared from criminal prosecution for a justifiable homicide, this by NO MEANS that the perp's relatives, or the perp himself cannot sue you for damages in civil court for damages. There are horror stories where a criminal has prevailed in civil cases over a homeowner who shot them justifiably.

Nothing is as devasting as a shotgun. All you have to be is close, just like horseshoes and hand grenades! They are cheap (Walmart and Big 5 routinely sell shotguns for under $300). Buy 4 shot or 00 Buck shot. Slugs are also an option, but, in my opinion TOO much stopping power, plus if you miss the round will go through walls.

Addionally the sound of a shotgun racking is a big deterant!

The best weapon to protect your home with is a very great security system. This stops them from comming in to start with. Second best is a dog in the house.

And if you have to have a gun, make it a 12 guage shot gun, a shorter barrel with perhaps a pistol grip.

20-gage Shotgun, preferably a pump, but you had better be the homeowner AND keep a trigger lock on the unloaded weapon when you are away from the home. Many states request you prove that "you were in fear of your life or suffering bodily disfigurement, with no reasonable expectation of fleeing."

a small .380 semi automatic, such as the Walther PPKS. Put a small laser sight on it for night shooting. Load it with hollow points. Keep it by the bed (since most home invasions are at night). If you have children, put it in a quick code release box (where you can hit two buttons in the dark at the same time out of five buttons on the panel) and practice opening it in the dark. Keep it off of safe if you keep it in the box. If you don't have children, just put it in your drawer and keep it locked and loaded.
