Popular myth has them as scavengers as opposed to the lion, the King of the Jungle, as the mighty hunter. The opposite is closer to the truth. Despite the relatively small back end, the business end of the things is very powerful, the jaws being among the strongest in the animal kingdom. Luckily for the people in the native area, they usually have something better to do.

They are larger than most people think. One can easily kill a human, and they travel in groups, so it is very easy to be killed and eaten by them.
They don't damage people. They attack you because they want to eat you. They are looking to kill you. Usually the damage is fatal.
