Many many things. But the biggest recurring difference that I see is MUCH LESS DISCIPLINE.

Changes have been both good and bad. In the last 50 years or so we have learned, and been more interested in learning, a great deal about child development. The average layman is reading more books on child rearing. We recognize that children should be both seen and heard, which was not the recommendation 50 years ago.
On the other hand, common sense seems to have flown out the window, along with protecting the innocence of our children. Media is guilty of exploiting children with violence, messages damaging to self-esteem (beauty standards) and moral ideals (vulgar rap lyrics, videos that exploit women, etc.) This is where common sense should kick in, but doesn't for most people. We have more disposable income than a couple of generations ago, or rather the ability to get into more debt; and many people do by allowing their children to try to keep up with the Joneses. They buy every popular item for their children and think it is a substitute for positive interaction and good parenting. We need to be more vilgilant about monitoring what our children are exposed to from the outside world which is only interested in making a buck.
Another bad thing that has evolved over the last couple of generations is a callousness toward the poor and disenfranchised. All children should be medically insured and offered quality education. We could afford that if we took care of home first, and then extended our charity to the world. However, the balance of the American dream is dependent on a permanent underclass. Any basic sociology or political science study will back me up on that.
Finally, in some ways we are just too permissive. Some of it is due to laziness and being misinformed. Some due to fatigue as parents have to work longer hours outside the home in general just to keep up financially.

The biggest difference is being able to discipline your children which has led to a whole world of trouble. I'm sorry but a time out just doesn't cut it. Another is the junk that they show on TV. Sometime things that even my 16 year old should be seeing. Another is the music. Some of the profanity and killing that they sing about is just garbage.

I think parents are becoming more interested in/aware of their kids' futures. Also things to consider are the internet/technology and how unsafe the world is becoming. I remember roaming all over as a child. My children are never beyond their back yard.

If parents take a genuine interest in their children and do their best, children will grow up with at least a good sense of themselves. That in itself is a great starting point.

No one parent is perfect. We all learn as we go, so the parents of yesterday have learned many new ways to parents and us parents of today will learn that some of our ways can improve as time and education evolve.

well its easy, self respect, valubility of people, politeness, love and much more have changed through the generations...... if you have noticed, the amount of people that are admitted into old folks home have risen 5 times the amount when it was in 1970's....... during those days, parents were appreciated as another side of GOD as without them we wouldnt be here but these days its the total opposite where they are taken as a burden............ those days you can expect your friends and neighours for help but these days all expect you to be independant and do all yourself....... people these days tend to sow off what they have to those that cant afford, what do we get in return????? nothing, in this materialistic world, nothing lasts forever......... remember nothing
