An older Nissan Almera. It looks unattractive, thus lower priced when second hand.
I would have said a hyundai accent, cheap and reliable but not so good on safety.
Dont expect loads for £1500 though. Check safety on NCAP details website. Some older cars dont rate well.

any ford fiesta diesel made before 1990 (G) they are built like rocks and last forever.
dont buy and escort, orion, sierra,or mondeo... theyre all junkers...
as are older vauxhalls.. cavalier and novas however, teh diesel chevette is a great car
but... dont buy a drossy commoners car... for 1500 quid you can buy a merc, or a volvo, or an audi, or a VW... (beemers in your price range are mostly recycled crap)
quality lasts... ive a 16yr old volvo... no rust whatsoever... does 40mpg and its a tank... 1000 quid off e bay 4years ago... and its cost me 300 quid thru 3 MOTS... fully comp is 245
tonys got a 14yr old merc 220d... with a full merc history... 2650000miles and it sounds better than my volvo (and he says it looks better) 1600 quid... oh, and it does 53 MPG...
VW golf or if you can find one a scirocco GTX... 1.8 engine out of the Golf GTi... again 50mpg if you dont thrash it... and they never need welding because of corrison... average price under 1000, and it will be immaculate for that price, as was the merc...
quality will always last... you show me a 20 year old ford that hasnt been rebuilt... they exist, but hteyre like hens teeth... and cuckoo clock poo... very rare.
anything built after 1990... waste of good money... apart from audi, Vw merc and volvo... id much rather have a 15yr old merc than a five year old ford...

You won't get much for that price.
A Ford Fiesta with 2 airbags will be your best bet.
