Found out my boyfriend's parents don't like me because I don't drink alcohol (1. I'm not old enough to drink 2. I think alcohol is gross 3. Experience with abusive alcoholics) I don't know what else I can do to make them like me.

My boyfriend drinks legally but not very often, a beer here or there but that's about it. His parents are social drinkers, I guess you would call them that. But once they saw me and offered me a drink I refused and politely said that I don't drink. Before my boyfriend told me that they liked me because I was "clean" looking. Whatever that means, and now they don't because I refused to drink....

the fact the they don't like you because you don't drink is the most ridiculous thing i've ever heard! why would you want to impress such ignorant people? as long as he likes you that's all that matters...just stay away from his parents.

I dont know why you would even want those shallow half wits to like you. It is enough your boyfriend does. Now comes the challenge. Is he like they are and can't have a good time or a relaxing time without the booze? If so run as quickly as you can, because you my little dear are co-dependant and need help. If your boyfriend is not a drinker, like his parents, then they need to just accept the two of you, Period. Drinking is not evil. Alcoholics unfortunately make it feel that way. Drinking must be done responsibly; as you already know. I was raised in an alcoholic home. It is hard to make decisions when all you have ever known revolves around drinking; bars; and drunks. It can be done. I strongly urge you to seek counseling, just for a little while, so that you don't end up loving some one else with an alcohol addiction. Bless you and good luck, dear. Nana

Aw babes, I have the same problem at the moment :( I'm 16 and been with him for 1 year and 2 months, but my dad sussed out and won't really talk about it. Tell them that your boyfriend will not interupt your school work. Your mum is likely to be happy - It's dads that are the problem. They still think of you as their little princesses, and it won't stop at that level. Give it time. How long have you been with him? Wait for about 3 months before telling your parents. Don't worry babes :) Take care x

I HAVE THE PERFECT ANSWER!!
if they ever talk to you about not drinking just reverse the pressure by saying something like "im just not an irresponsible alcoholic" or something, but obviously say something more subtle than that. but you get the idea. its okay to have a negative relationship with someone as long as its with the right people. oh! and let them have experience with abusive alcoholics, it might change theyre opinion. if they seem stuck up or something about drinking then just act the same way about not drinking.

So they don't like you because you don't drink? Well, that is a pretty stupid thing, so maybe just tell them you don't have anything against alcohol, you just don't like it. Tell them that even if you DO have something against people that drink.

Wow!!!! That is a new one!!! Proponents of minor alcoholism? That is freaky. Just be nice and assert your opinions on underage drinking. They will find you to be an independent young woman and hopefully admire you for it.

it doesn't really make a lot of sense that someone would dislike you because you choose not to drink.

stick to your guns... you are MUCH SMARTER than the boyfriend's parents seem to be....

i have to wonder what's wrong with them?

duh
