I have an IG. Everyone who owns other breeds says it looks like he is starving. The vet said he is fine but all the IG people I hang around with tell me he is TOO FAT!

I don't know who to believe please help?

In IGs if more than 3 vertebrae are sticking out of his back than he could use a little weight. If none or less then 3 are don't worry about it. Unless they get real fat (which would be a sign of cushings, and it is very unusual for them to get fat) I wouldn't worry. Unless RIBS not a backbone but RIBS are sticking out your dog is most likely fine! 3 vertebrae sticking out is NORMAL. One might even say a good weight. IGs are sight hounds in the toy group but still sight hounds, Like Salukis, greyhounds, whippets, Borzoi etc, they are supposed to be thin but actually it is very elegant.

The Italian Greyhound can weigh as little as 7 lbs. or as much as 14 or 15 lbs., but the average weight is about 10 lbs.
A good way to prove if he is OK weight wise is to stand over the dog with him between your legs, and feel the ribs. If you can feel them then he is OK. You don't want to be able to see them\count them. Then he is indeed to skinny. Go ahead and weigh him on a scale just to be sure. Your local Petsmart has the vet in the store which also has a scale free to use at the front desk.

get to a reputable breeder and see the show dogs ( hopefully your pups parents) and go to akc.org and look at them
