We are competeing to see who can shake half and half into butter the fastest. But one of our friends said you can't do it. Is that true or false?

No, you can't make butter that way.

First, the elements in the cream have to reach a crystallization point for separation (ie, it has to be just below freezing temperature, as well as the container and your hands).

Second, you would have to shake hard enough to mimic a food processor. That's impossible with frostbitten hands.

Third, 2 cups of whole milk will yield 4 ounces of butter in a food processor, with ice cold blades and jar. The amount of butter that would come from a packet would be invisible.

you cannot shake half and half into butter. Butter is made from fresh cream only. Half and half contains other ingredients. Butter needs the fat of full cream to blend with air to make butter. Only thing you are going to get is a sore wrist

He is right. You make butter with cream only. The fat globs together to make the butter and the watery stuff is what is left. Keep on shaking and making! Nana

i believe you would have to have heavy cream in order to make butter because if you over whip heavy cream when making whipped cream you make butter.
