Actually, I asked this yesterday but I could NOT believe that I only received 4 responses as I thought the Atheist would jump all over this one. So, I wanted to give it another try.

NIV bible 2 Peter 2:1 through 2:3............But there were also false prophets among the people, just as there will be false teachers among you. They will secretly introduce destructive heresies, even denying the sovereighn Lord who bought them---bringing swift destruction on themselves. Many will follow their shameful ways and will bring the way of truth into disrepute. In their greed these teachers will exploit you with stories they have made up. Their condemnation has long been hanging over them, and their destruction has not been sleeping."

Yes it is true and to prove that.Read this:

Matthew 24:4 And Jesus answered and said unto them, Take heed that no man lead you astray.
Matthew 24:5 For many shall come in my name, saying, I am the Christ; and shall lead many astray.
Matthew 24:24 For there shall arise false Christs, and false prophets, and shall show great signs and wonders; so as to lead astray, if possible, even the elect.

I believe yes.

Just as God's prophets of the past were opposed by false prophets, believers are opposed by false teachers. The difference in terminology suggests that the false teachers among Peter's readers made no claim to being prophets, but were distorting the Scriptures with heretical interpretations.

Peter's certainty that there will be such false teachers probably rests on Jesus' predictions ( Matt 24:4,5 ) . False teachers could e recognized by their doctrinal errors (such as a denial of Christ ), and by abrupt departure from the Christian community. ( 1 John 2:19 )

Peter is addressing the ethical implications of false teachings. The false teacher gloried in the privileges of Christianity but treated its moral demands with indifference.

They blasphemed. The truth of Christian redemption is held in contempt by many because of the immoral behavior of professing Christians.

I think some Churches are but not all. I like the KJV version:

2Pe 2:1 ¶ But there were false prophets also among the people, even as there shall be false teachers among you, who privily shall bring in damnable heresies, even denying the Lord that bought them, and bring upon themselves swift destruction.

2Pe 2:2 And many shall follow their pernicious ways; by reason of whom the way of truth shall be evil spoken of.

2Pe 2:3 And through covetousness shall they with feigned words make merchandise of you: whose judgment now of a long time lingereth not, and their damnation slumbereth not.

The important part of that is "denying" the Lord. I haven't been to any churches that do that, but I have been to some that only pay lip service to the power of God and His Holy Spirit. They say that there is a Trinity, but don't teach anything about what the Holy Spirit does.

It's certainly a true description of certain people trying to sell holiness today, but I would not characterize entire churches as such.

Acting in ignorance of truth is not the same thing as deliberately trying to falsify truth.
