Just regular guys, nothing special. Peter is an interesting example because when Jesus was arrested Peter denied knowing Jesus 3xs. However, after he received the Holy Spirit, he went about preaching about Christ and died for the cause.

They were all sinners and mostly uneducated men of their day. The were struggling with the same issues we struggle with today, until they met Jesus and were transformed with their hearts on fire with love and devotion because they recognized Him as the promised Messiah and the Holy Spirit gave them the graces and strength to proclaim this to all the world. They still sinned, look at Peter denial of knowing and following Jesus yet he repented and was forgiven whereas Judas had sunk to hopeless despair and committed suicide.

Some of them are fishermen.

Matthew 4:18 And walking by the sea of Galilee, he saw two brethren, Simon who is called Peter, and Andrew his brother, casting a net into the sea; for they were fishers.
Matthew 4:19 And he saith unto them, Come ye after me, and I will make you fishers of men.

By and large they were just normal Joes. No one was a doctor or lawyer or especially destinguished other than as maybe a artisan.

Jesus was a high Artisan, a wood worker.
