I wish I knew. My husband was in a succession of childrens homes when he was a kid as his mum had mental health issues, but he never bemoaned the fact or felt resentful. He just got on with his life, is a hard working family bloke, and has turned out more than ok .

Alot of people choose to feel sorry for theirself, while others choose to put the past behind them and make something of theirself....some people i think just like to blame all there problems or the way they are on their upbringing and while i agree this affects a person greatly, once they are of a certain age they an choose to become different an have a good life-it isnt easy but as you said they choose to fight for it, it is always easier to just give up so thats why many people do, they take the easy way.

Hi, Denny
Alot of people have rough childhoods, but that shouldn't let them stop from having a good life eventually down the road. I feel people should stay positive and want better than what they had as a child. My dad was an alcoholic, but I never became one. I feel people shouldn't dwell in the past that only makes people sick, just accept things and move on and stay positive and keep faith.

The truth of the matter is that we all have an Achilles heel and what can make someone insecure and unhappy will not phase the other person. It is nothing to do with being week or strong but how we are influenced by other people and their actions. Life is a bowl of cherries...a big bowl at that.

Personality and character. I would like to throw in astrology as well, but that would alarm any anti-astrology person to jump on me like a pack of rugby players, and I don't really feel like being at the bottom of a pile of flesh...

Oh well, those three are still my answers, like it or not. And I won't elaborate this time - I don't like to repeat myself, even though I like the sound of my own voice... o.O

I will add; think about two brothers, or two sisters, or brother and sister, with exactly the same upbringing, they still take on things differently, no matter what upbringing they had. Apparently environment cannot explain everything, neither can genetics...

I had a hard childhood - I am a fighter but at the same time can be a bit vulnerable and insecure. However, my adulthood has been fabulous - life is a lottery, I always think there is someone worse off than me when I feel sorry for myself. Also, life is what you make it, whatever experiences you have had.

SOME people just see it as an easy way out, they can't be bothered and use their tough upbringing as an excuse for the problems in their life. then again some people may be really affected by things that happened when they were young and just cant get passed it.

Depends on the person. Different things affect different people in different ways. For some people, fighting is simply too hard at that point in time...it can be really painful to fight sometimes. People can get to a stage where they don't see the point in fighting. It just depends. It makes me sad to hear that people give up. It is no reflection on them; they are not lazy/weak or a bad person, it's just the way things ahve gone. I admire those who are fighters, and pray for those who aren't.

Myself and my sister had the same upbringing, yet we are in very different places in our lives. Everyone has a choice to make their life better, i think it all depends the individual.

I think it involves peoples own resiliance to things. Some things that have happened to me as I grew up were pretty shocking to my friends but it made me what I am and I don't think I am too bad. My brothers were pretty screwed up though, one died the other is now in a happy relationship but he doesn;t want anythign to do with me or my mum. Thats cool though as long as he is happy
