How can we work together to help stop animal abuse?

Good question. I think education is the key, and I think it needs to start with children. I know the local Humane Society here has a program that goes into the 1st grade ( and maybe a little higher ) and talks to kids about how to treat animals, and also about how to be safe around animals. I think by the time people reach adulthood, it's awfully hard to change a mindset. If we can start with kids, and help them understand that animals feel fear and pain, and that it's not ok to put any living creature through that - I think it would go a long way.

We also need to work toward stronger legislation in regard to animal cruelty.

Consider working with and donating to the local ASPCA or Humane Society.

One thing I don't think a lot of people get, is that people who abuse animals lack the ability to feel sympathy and empathy for a living creature - that's a scary thing. It means they have the capacity to hurt people as well as animals.

It does need to be stopped.

It depends on your definition of animal abuse...
Are you like normal people, where that means beating, malnourishment, and other harsh treatment?
Or are you the crazy type, saying that animals have the same rights as human beings and therefore, should not be used for food, research, or even pets?

Mainly, it deals with education. And when you're walking down the street and you see something going on you don't like, let them know. But please, be cordial about it.
