I know that Greek is a difficult language. I was taught some when I was really young and now I forget. I've been trying to study on my own. How long does it take to be able to understand?

I think it depends on how much you keep in touch with the language. If you read greek literature or greek newspaper articles, you'll be able to remember it better and learn faster. It's good to have a dictionary handy.
edit: A bad adoption of ancient greek? Don't get me started.
Learn to speak english properly before you blame a third language.

Yeah, I'm learning Greek, too.The grammar skills are pretty similar to Spanish, so they are easy to memorize (I also take Spanish).Have a Greek dictionary ready for all the big words.Pronunciation is important.
It really depends on the person you are.You have an advantage-you have some prior knowledge.Anyways, good luck!

yes is a difficult language because is a bad adoption of the ancient greek language and to learn well, you must and to read this language and the letters are not the sames. you can try to learn Albanian is more simple and similar to the Greek and also you can try to visit Greece but try to don't talk in English in any moment.

it is difficult, as well as Russian! in short, try to get some young fellow here willing to chat with you in Greek, and you will start to understand it, bit by bit!
don't associate ancient Greek to modern, it's like associ ating Latin to Italian; though you will find similarities in words and the back ground-derivation!

It's difficult. I learned some as a child, also, but forgot much of it because I didn't have anyone to practice with. Get a basic grammer or vocabulary book to start with. Also, do you have any relatives or friends to help you?

it depends.. having a greek friend helps a lot, staying in greece helps too. buy a good grammar book.
