You can Amend a return up to 3 years from the due date of a return to claim a refund, (ie 2003 must be filed by 04/15/2007)

If there is a balance owed on the Amended returnthere is no limitation of filing the 1040X for prior years

There's no limit on how far back you can amend taxes, but if the amendment results in a refund, you'll only get it if you file the amendment within three years of the original due date for the return.

If your return, and your changes, are complex, having a CPA prepare it would be a good idea.

You can go back as far as 2003 in 2006. To file a amended return I would try just a local tax preparer. Because it cannot be E-filed anyway it has to be paper. Try to get some one cheap because it is not that hard to do, but H&R and some of the big companies will charge an arm and a leg. 1040X is what they would use.
