Many years ago, before Protect and Serve, the Police had the moto " Pride, Integrity and Guts" That is where PIG came from and yes, if only 1/2 or 1% are bad, then on a force of say 5000, there are a bunch of crooked cops.
The bottom line is when you need one, you call 911 and don't worry what kind shows up do you?? Most cops will tell you that they dislike dirty cops, but like the teaching profession, takes an act of Congress to get one booted out. Even with them being caught with their hands in the cookie jar, they find the loop holes in the justice system, Just like the real crooks lawyers do.
Its one of the toughest jobs out there and no, they don't get the credit they deserve. Many times criminals are busted in the act and liberal judges make rulings that are a shame to the hard working law abiding citizens of the community.
Police have two jobs. One is to maintain a high visibility in the community so anyone thinking of breaking the law wont. And the second, is to catch those who do break the laws.

You will find that when people need police, they grip about how slow they got there. When they break the law, they grip about cops not doing their jobs, out picking on innocent people.
Most police officers will tell you, you can bust someone in the act of buying dope, robbing a store or killing someone and the justice system gives this person more rights than the victim gets or the police get. We are the ones on trial, just to make sure we didn't violate any of the criminals rights during the arrest.
Go put on a gun and bade and try to Protect and Serve and see what kind of response you get. Most departments have a ride along program, take the time and go see for yourself what we deal with daily.

The proper title is "Peace Officer" or "Officer of the Peace"
Cause most people don't like them as they think that they are a restriction upon their own personal freedom, usually found when that one is breaking the law.
Try policing a free society, it is almost an oxymoron.
