Just a leftover part from evolution? Does anyone know what purpose it has in the human body?

My ex is a doctor. It is vestigial. It really serves no useful purpose, and becomes a liability when it collects matter and becomes infected.

Vestigial means rudimentary. In herbivores, the appendix is part of the cecum, a sac where fibrous material is fermented for additional energy. It has lost that function, but has become the most concentrated immune center in the gut. This is the crux of evolution. An unneeded structure both regressed and took on a new function.

It's just a leftover, because it hasn't got a particular function in the body.

It does not have much purpose but if it burst you are in a heap of trouble.
