Who'd you make the purchase from? Just because the charge hasn't been posted yet doesn't mean that they stole your card, so you don't need to cancel it. That creates a bunch of headaches if you have any automatic payments that use the number.

What you can do is call your card issuer and tell them that you're nervous about this to give some heads-up in case of any suspicious charges. If it's a credit card, you're only liable for the first $50 in fraudulant charges (though some companies are starting to waive). If it's a debit card, contact your bank immediately, tell them what happened, and see if you can get a new debit card number. If your debit card is stolen, a criminal can wipe out your checking account... it's happened to 2 people I've known. (Wachovia waits until the investigation -- which takes several weeks -- is over to put money back into the account.)

If they stole your card number, your problem would not be that the charge had not posted. You would have charges you had not authorized posted to your account. When did you make the purchase? It is not unusual for a charge to take up to a week to show up on your account. You can always call the merchant back and ask about the status of your purchase.
