Do we really NEED to give an engagement gift, I mean, why do people have engagement parties when there will be a bachelor party or a bridal shower, and yet another gift! Then shortly after that, the wedding and ANOTHER gift. If the engagement party is in lieu of a bachelor/bridal party/shower, then heck, if you know them well enough, give something sassy, like lingerie!

Anything you would give as a wedding gift is also a good engagement gift.

Traditionally gifts given to a couple who are recently engaged would be things for their "bottom drawer". Table linen, napkins and so on. Items they could put away until they moved into their own home.
When my husband and I became engaged, we were given some Portugese tableware, linens and bedding.

Well, the ring should cost at least 3 months salary.

Another question with no detail. It depends on the circumstances.
