That things weren't going well is an understatement. Afghanistan was bleeding the Soviet Union dry and there were no signs that it would let up. Particularly with us supplying arms to the Taliban and other militias that were fighting the Soviets. The terrorists do not lack for places to plan or train. We are ruining our economy and sacrificing our soldiers with no promise of success. I would have liked to see us rebuild the Iraqi infrastructure quickly and gain the trust of the people, but I'm thinking it's too late for that.
If an expert I trusted told me it could be accomplished before we feel the effects of peak oil, I'd be for it. But the present administration seems to lack both the competence and the honesty.

The mistake the Soviet Union made in Afghanistan was not pulling out early, it was going there in the first place. The US supported those people that filled the power vacuum (the enemy of my enemy is my friend). Now we don't have a choice. The military option will accomplish nothing but more death and destruction. The longer we stay, the more damage we do. The sooner we pull out, the sooner the healing can begin. It will be painful at first but Iraq will heal itself.

the war in iraq has nothing to do with the 9/11 attacks or the larger war on terror.
there is no reason to be there other than the private contracts that are there making trillions off the backs of dead soldiers and future generations of americans - the ones who will pay for this.

People like Obama and Hillary use it for political gain. They don't give a rats behind about the military, but it is politically beneficial to them to say "Let's get out of Iraq now".

In this country, you often hear politicians discuss "my party" before "my country" - its now seems that many Democrats have staked their political future on a failure in Iraq.
Can't say why, even Hillary voted to go to war. And now to cover her 'act', she says if, "...if I only knew then..", - demonstrating that she's just another Monday morning quarterback that wants the voters to forget her record.
Everyone would like to go through life with the ability to make past decisions on current information, thats not how it works.
Not even for Hillary.

If any country thinks they can occupy and free the middle east, they are nuttier than the Middle Eastern people.
They have lived this way for centuries, and don't want to change. If they want to live in the sand in tents I say who are we to try to change that? We need to either go in there with all we got and blow them completely away or get out.

They do not realize the type of enemy we are up against. This is not the same type as in WWII, this is muslim extremists. The people who want to pull out refuse to acknowedge that if we leave there, they will simply follow us here. They don't realize that by pulling out we are bringing the war home to our soil.
