I'm familiar with this dilemma. You can't afford to go to school but you can't afford not to either. The govt. ain't likely to help you. Unemployment benefits probably vary according to whichever state you call home but I would be very surprised if you could quit and collect unemployment no matter how noble your intentions. Perhaps your employer offers tuition reimbursement? If they don't go to them and make this suggestion. Unless you're in a very small company there are almost certainly others there who would return to school given the opportunity.

You should get fired or laid off from your job before collecting unemployment. But make sure you don't do something really bad in order to get fired. Just miss some days. And say to the unemployment office that you were sick or had a family emergency. But don't tell them you are going to school because you are not allowed to collect unemployment while going to school. But make sure you check with your local unemployment agency about that first. Trust me, I've been fired a few times, so I know about unemployment. :P

You can't get unemployment compensation if you quit your job.

But you can get an on line degree by doing your home work on a computer at night.

Job in the day. School on the computer at night. Done deal.

You don't get unemployment if you quit your job, only if you are laid off. You can take out loans to help you get through college. You can also work part-time while you're going to school, and you can apply for scholarships.
