Okay I have a line of fractions and I want it to automatically calucate them as decimals. I've tried format > cells> number > number but that doesn't change anything. tahnks

Apparently your fractions have been entered as text -- you can verify this by seeing how they display: if they are left-justified they are text.
Assume cell A1 contains a fraction entered as text. I discovered that the following formula will convert it to a decimal number:
=VALUE("0" & " " & A1)
You can enter this formula for one fraction, copy and paste it down the row or across the columns for the rest.

I just tired it and it worked fine:
I went to format cell as number.
I then typed in 1/4 and 1/3 and it was turned into a decimal.
