1/2 carat is actually quite large nd looks beautiful if it is of high quality. I have a 1/2 carat solitaire and it cost my fiance about 2500.00, but he really talked them down and it was on sale. to get what you're thinking of (highest quality) will cost you anywhere from 2500 to 6000. it really depends on where you go. I would say try not to go smaller than a .3 carat, that size can be quite lovely. you may also want to look at rings with multiple smaller stones. they have a ot of sparkle and are very beautifu but cost much less than a solitaire with one large stone. also keep in mind you can upgrade your stone later, keeping the same setting. just a thought. good luck! i'm sure she will love whatever you pick out!
sorry, I should also say that I am 22 years old, my fiance is 23 and so our financial situation is probably comparable to yours. He had to save up for the ring, but he paid it all upfront. DO NOT choose a ring that you have to make installment payments on. save up and pay for it all, that way you're not being assaulted by interest. good luck!

Too Sweet!!!
I have a 3/4 carat center stone on my ring, and it's quite large. I think 1/2 carat is a good, beautiful sized diamond.
However, pay attention to the kinds of jewelry she wears usually... if she has a lot of rings with a centerstone and some accent stones, you may want to reconsider getting a solitare.
But, there are rings that you can buy that are solitare engagement rings, and when you purchase the wedding band, you can either purchase a simple gold band to go behind the engagement ring, or you can purchase a "bridal set" which insets the solitare ring into a setting that has accent diamonds (my mother has one and it is beautiful).
No matter what you buy, she will love it, and trust me, no matter what the ring looks like, she's going to want to show everyone she knows!
Congratulations!

I have a 1/2 carat 3-stone ring and it's on the small side. So, if you go with the 1/2 carat, I'd go with the solitaire if you can afford it.
However, keep in mind that an engagement ring does not have to be a diamond - you could choose a ruby, a sapphire, ect. Your girlfriend may like that her engagement ring is just as unique as she is.
You may also want to consider a vintage ring. I would love to own a ring from the 50's because it had a place in history.

if she has been with you for four years she knows everything about you and is still there. Don't put so much worry into the ring thought yes worry no. The ring you pick will be perfect even if its out of a cracker jack box. She wants to be with you the ring is just gravy if you can afford the 1/2 carat go for it if not pick something else. My grandparents have been married over 50 years and her ring was a pearl with a ruby on each side. My own ring is a Sapphire That cost just under 400 and I picked and my husband said he was surprised he had expected to pay over10000 for the ring(2 months and all) .

you have to ask yourself... what kind of taste does she have.. if she is flamboyant.. you will need a HUGE ring for her to show off and feel good about
does she have big or small fingers?
if she is a bit different than most girls.. then you need something other than a round stone.. something that sets her apart from her friends.. marquis cut or square cut
which is also a more sofisticated cut
1/2 carat stones are practical, wonderful size.. but it isn't always necessary to even go that big...and it gives you the opportunity to give her something bigger down the road..maybe a 10th anniversary or some other milestone
look at her.. think about what she is like and go from there...the girls in the jewelery department are trained to help you
PLEASE DO NOT TAKE HER SHOPPING FOR HER RING... THAT SAYS YOU HAVE NO IDEA ABOUT WHAT MAKES HER TICK

there is a rule about these things. the rule is to spend about three months salary on the ring.
if you really need help go to a good reputable jewellery store and ask to speak to the manager. this person will be able to point you in the right direction. they may well not be a diamond expert but will know who in their store is.
also if the stone is a half carat or less the colour won't show up unless a gem glass is used.
a half carat is a really good start. blue diamonds are the most expensive. and yellow is the cheapest .
if you get a yellow stone in a white gold setting , in a marquise shape that will be a stunner.
good luck on your upcoming nuptials. and happy shopping.

Carat size should not matter, but it does. I think that every girl dreams of at least 1 carat. You can always upgrade. My husband gave me 1 carat for our engagnement, but I have since upgraded to 2 carats and as the years pass, I hope to upgrade more.

This is a typical american problem!
The girl wants to show her engagement ring with a biggg diamond...the bigger, the more the guy has spend on her.
That seems to be soooo important!
Yes you sound like a sweet and caring guy who wants to make his gf happy. That is the main thing, that you really love her. The ring.....is only a token of your love for her and why should it be so very expensive?
As a dutch person I don't understand that.
Chose a ring that you like to give to her and don't overdo.
Ask the jewellry if you can change the ring if she really doesn't like it.

I am almost positive that no matter what you get her she will show it off 1 second after it is on her hand. Just remember that you can always "add" to it as the years go. Dont get something that is too expensive and wont be paid off until your 40. Get an idea if she likes something simple or extravagant. I personally like simple because it is more tasteful.
Congrats!!
