Legal steroids have came along way at being safe. I don't however recommend them. There are side effects as poster five states, as infertility along with other medical issues and the more you take and the longer you take them the worse it gets.
I am not totally against the weight training supplement world, Just don't like tampering with hormones or taking any chances.
The same results can be achieved with the right diet and workout planning. It takes more scientific knowledge, but can be accomplished. They don't tell you everything in the magazines.
As I state it "about every one is right and everyone is wrong."
Magazines are chucked full with information. Some good, some bad, but never everything you need to know and never right for everyone.
I have never written the same plan for two different people. There are just too many things that are different for each person.
I have a basic training info pack for everyone, but it's just the basics, just like with dieting, everyone is different.

steroids kick your body into hyper metabolism. They screw with blood sugar and other things, and arent really good for you unless it's short term to overcome an illness.

Illicit steroid use for bodybuilding can be done safely for a cycle, but it's very psychologically addictive, so many lifters do a few cycles in a row, then their nads stop making testosterone and when the quit the juice they get "b itch t its" and shrivelled up nads .

Ongoing use makes the hands grow again, bad acne, the brow and jaw bones grow to protrude. Bad temper...lots of issues.

It is good you are concerned but be careful if he is serous about taking him it could ruin your friendship if you try to stop him but making him aware is wise, guys who use stteroids are like ggirls who are anorexix, bulimic etc. I have a family member who took them, it actually took him lying in a hospital bed almost dead to realize they were dangerous, he was on them for over 3 years and it almost killed him, some of the sitefects for men include

Atrophy (wasting away of tissues or organs) of the testicles
Loss of sexual drive
Diminished or decreased sperm production
Breast and prostate enlargement
Decreased hormone levels
Sterility

also mental effects include

Mood swings (including manic-like symptoms leading to violence)
Impaired judgment (stemming from feelings of invincibility)
Depression
Nervousness
Extreme irritability
Delusions
Hostility and aggression

the best way to stop him isnt your choice its his and only he can choose it the longer he takes them and the more good efects and results he gets will make him more and more addicted so try and tell him now just show him the negative results that steroids can have verses good and show him the negative results are more than poitive ones but dont expect him to be open to stopping so easily ut talk to him maybe you will get lucky

good luck
God Bless
Lyzzy

Steroids will lessen his bone density, anger rages, make him weak after a while, and private parts will change.

Steroids are a class of compounds that share a similar chemical structure. This broad group of chemicals includes many normal substances in the body (such as cholesterol), vitamins (vitamin D), hormones (for example, the sex hormones and their derivatives), and drugs given to treat inflammation (hydrocortisone, prednisone). The adrenal glands secrete a number of steroid hormones, known as corticosteroids, that are important for the maintenance of blood pressure, blood glucose levels, salt and water balance, and other critical body processes. However, when we speak of steroid abuse by athletes, doctors are referring to the misuse of the so-called “anabolic steroids,” which are manufactured drugs similar to the male sex hormone testosterone.

The term anabolic refers to the muscle-building properties of these man-made substances. Available legally only by prescription, anabolic steroids are sometimes prescribed by doctors to treat conditions in which testosterone levels are abnormally low, or in certain chronic conditions such as AIDS that are associated with loss of muscle mass. Athletes, bodybuilders, and other people sometimes abuse anabolic steroids in order to improve performance and physical appearance.

Misuse of anabolic steroids is a hazardous practice with wide-ranging adverse effects. Some of the major documented side effects of steroid misuse are:

liver tumors,
high blood pressure,
fluid retention,
increases in LDL (“bad”) cholesterol levels,
decreases in levels of the “good” cholesterol HDL,
kidney tumors, and
severe acne.
Aggression, mood swings, and other psychiatric side effects can also result from the abuse of anabolic steroids.

Along with the general health hazards of steroid abuse, gender-specific effects also occur. Men may experience:

infertility,
reduced sperm count,
testicular shrinking,
baldness,
breast development, and
may have an increased risk for the development of prostate cancer.
Women who abuse steroids have androgenic, or masculinizing, side effects that can include:

growth of facial hair,
deepened voice,
menstrual abnormalities, and
male-pattern baldness.
For adolescents who have not yet experienced the typical growth spurt, anabolic steroid abuse can result in premature maturation of the skeletal system, meaning that teens who abuse steroids run the risk of having short stature for the rest of their lives.

It is possible to develop a physiological dependence upon steroids. Taking steroid drugs affects the functioning and hormone secretion pattern of the adrenal glands, since these glands are the source of many natural steroid hormones. For this reason, when doctors prescribe steroids, their discontinuation is always tapered (gradually taking smaller doses) to allow the adrenal glands to return to their normal pattern of function and secretion. Likewise, abrupt discontinuation of anabolic steroid use can also result in withdrawal symptoms that can be dangerous and even potentially fatal.
