I currently take 2mg of Xanax three times a week. I don't take it every day because I don't want my body to build a tolerance to the drug. But I was thinking about taking 1.5MG four times a week instead. Will taking it 4 days out of the week cause a tolerance to Xanax?

Taking ANY Xanax regularly will cause you to develop a tolerance, if not a dependence, on the drug. Benzodiazepines have a pretty long half life (Xanax is 6-20 hrs, and it takes 5 half-lives to get rid of most of the drug) so you always have some in your system.

That change will probably not make much of a difference.

Regarding withdrawal from Xanax- The poster above anwered your question, but I'll throw my 2 cents in based on my own experience- Ask your Dr. If there is a different drug that you could take for your condition (bear in mind I have no idea why you are on this medication), because if you stay on this drug you WILL develop a tolerance to it, and become dependent on it. I have struggled with this for a while now. I was prescribed xanax for anxiety and trying to get off of that stuff is pure he** physically as well as mentally, and it takes a looong time to taper off of it. Don't stop taking it, but please talk to your Dr. and see if you can switch to something that
is less physically addicting.

Just have a days break twice a week, what your taking isn't a lot and i don't think there's a huge risk for any uncontrollable addiction, later on you most likely will need a little more each day but that's pretty normal and if you ever get seriously hooked then you'll just have to seek medical advice to slowly wein you down back to a dose that suits and is beneficial to you. If you don't have any drug or alcohol abuse probs in the past then it is more unlikely that you will have a problem. hope all goes well and let your Dr know your thinking of increasing the dose a little cause your not getting the desired effect, it could well be you just need that bit extra.

Taking xanax long-term (any dose) could cause a tolerance (meaning that you need more).

Tolerance: You need more to feel the same
Addiction: Your body is physically addicted to a drug and you get ill (nausea, vomiting, etc) without it
Dependence: You have a psychological need to have the drug

According to this blurb (below), your personality may also have something to do with it.

Both the dosage and the frequency will aggravate tolerance and addiction. 2 mg is a pretty high dose. There are people who take 0.5 mg and have a hard time getting off it. The withdrawal symptoms are pretty bad and can include seizures or worse.
