I have a male and a female parakeet. They are old enough and I have all the supplies for them to breed including a nesting box... the question is how to get them to breed. What should I do?

First, do not put the nest box in the cage until you do your research.

Go to the book store and purchase a book on how to raise and breed budgies.

Go to the vet and learn how to properly handfeed, just in case they toss or abandon the chicks.

Find buyers for any and all chicks that hatch, before you let them breed. There are LOTS of birds out there due to overbreeding that are in need of homes.

Why do you want to breed? Is it to better the species, or because you think they need to? Do you know the background of both birds? Did their parents have any problems? Are your birds on a good breeding diet? Do they have enough calcium to prevent eggbinding? Do they have fresh foods offered daily?

If you cannot answer all of those questions, then I would not breed. If they are not on a good breeding diet, pellets, fresh foods, and very little seed, you may loose one of your birds during the breeding, or have chicks that are sickly.

Even if they are old enough, but just old enough, they might not. Young birds have little or no interest in sex. I would suggest waiting till they are a year old or older....Secondly, even if you THINK that you have a male and female, there could be a chance that there are 2 males (unless you see the cear turning brown, then its most likely a female.) you cant tell by thier courtship behavior, they court because they love the other bird, not because of its sex. Lets say you did hav eone male and one female, they still just might not be interested. Birds are picky, and might just not be interested...They wont have sex with any other keet that comes along...YOu need to be happy with them as pets, and not think of them as baby creators. Please take a look at the link below, it has all kinds of info for breeding keets, but make sure that you are ready for baby keets, they need a LOT of attention, especially for the first 4 weeks...Hope this helped!

just let them go. they will breed when they are ready. the female will start chewing on things, and they may fight alot. that is fine. make shure you keep their food dish(s) full, as they will eat more once the eggs-to-be hatch. good luck!
