if 3 people go for a meal and the main course is 10 pound and they only eat the main corse. so the total bill is 30 pounds the waiter then relised that they were over charged and give them a fiver back. the 3 people then cant simply split 5 between 3. and so they have a pound back each then tip the waiter 2 pound. this means they have now paid 9 for the main course. ADD 3 NINES = 27 + 2 pound tip is 29 weres that other pound gone?

It's not gone anywhere. Just consider where the money is at the end.

They've paid nine pounds each like you say. That's £27 in total. The restaurant has £25 and the waiter has £2. That's the £27.

Alternatively: they paid 3 x £10 in total at the start.
£25 of that ended up with the restaurant.
£2 ended up with the waiter.
£3 ended up back in their pockets.
That's the £30.

Adding the numbers that you've added doesn't make any sense.

how many more times must we see this!!!!!!
Its a cleverly worded question, but the maths is all wrong.
Isn't it obviuos??!?!
If they've paid £25 and kept an extra £1 each, then they have £28, not £27!!!!!!
