NASCAR did that so there would be more pit stops,so they could check the tire wear. They didn't want a bunch of tire failures and cars hitting the wall. But in the Busch race they had a bunch of slippery tires and that happened anyway.

Good question. Supposedly for safety. You would need a smaller cell with the soft tire, but the tires they are racing on are like rocks. There was no need to change the fuel cell. The guys yesterday were taking no tires or two tires all the time. If they had kept the soft tire, then they would have needed the smaller cell to make guys pit before they blew out. But, both changes were not necessary, and are actually causing a MORE dangerous race. The guys can not control the cars!! I want NASCAR to tell me how that is safer!

The standard at all tracks used to be 22 gallons. In an effort to break up some of the packs at restrictor plate tracks NASCAR went with a smaller fuel cell, which by default should have meant more pit stops, more pit strategy. At Las Vegas, with it's new surface and Goodyear's harder tire, NASCAR hopes the smaller 13 gallon fuel cell will help reduce the heat that is generate in the tires that lead to several tire problems during tests at the track. They are trying to avoid the disaster that happened at Charlotte last year as far as tires go.

John 5242 answered it correctly. They did it to create a SAFER race. The tires are gonna wear out today and it could help prevent some of the wrecks.
