That appears to be exactly what we have done. Before we found out about Jesus and Mohamed therewere other forms of religion to try and explain the unexplainable. The vikings had the norse gods, the Egyptians and the Pharoahs had a diffrent set of god. The greeks had the greek gods and the Aztecs and Incas had another set. Even the Aboriginies in Australia had a set.
Over time these have mostly been lost and new gods have appeared. Which begs the question what happened to the old Gods and if there is a God (lol) why didnt he just appear at the start and stay the same. It sort of makes you laugh at Adam and Eve, They had an argument with god and spread over the world and invented diffrent gods all over the place.
No Gods are just the way humanity explained the unexplainable before science could catch up and start asking the really big questions. Like how big is the universe and is string theory a reality etc etc etc.

I don't think God exists in the first place and that people DID invent him, but I'll answer anyway.

I think people would invent Him, or something similar, simply because most people want the cushion of there being an afterlife when they die. That they are special and loved and have a purpose, etc.

IF you were invisible people would have trouble believing in you, too..!! . "GOD" or the equivalent thereof exists or does not exist regardless of what anyone "believes" or does not believe..!! The reality is whatever the reality happens to be .
I find it illogical to be required to "believe" any particular thing.. Belief is not knowledge, though strongly held belief often Feels like knowledge..!! A "natural" explanation for everything seems to fit.. except perhaps for the existence of lifeforms..? The Invisible Intelligence "automatically" "created" the many lifeforms.. for artistic reasons, for interest, for entertainment, for a great experiment, for the sheer joy of it..!? Invisible Intelligence does not 'judge' you or 'punish' you, for you are basically programmed to be and do just as you are, a worthy human being..!! It does really make sense to be nice and good and intelligent and kind and caring and to improve all things to the greatest extent possible, fellow human beings

If God didn't exist, and we needed a god, we would indeed have to invent him in order to have one.

Absolutely. That's why we have so many religions. Even in the remotest tribes of the world where they have not even heard of Abrahamic Religion, they have higher powers. Always the higher powers. The Bible(s), Qu'ran, etc.. are all new books relative to the history of mankind. The human mind seems to have a disposition towards thinking it knows everything, so, when it doesn't, whatever is wished to be true becomes gospel.

We did. Every human culture has a "god" of some kind. So even if we believe that OURS is the only true one, all the rest of the humans have INVENTED one (or more).

Every single culture has "invented " their own god, ultimately we are all believing in the same higher power.
