I am taking my family on vacation in Gulf Shores Alabama in June and we plan on doing some shore/pier fishing. What kind of fish will we catch and what kind of tackle/bait shall we use?

I fish From Perdido pass to Fort Morgan Every year in the Spring and in the Fall. I use light tackle with pieces of shrimp to catch small whiting. I then hook the whiting through the nose and use them for bait on the bottom. Cast them into the deep water beyond the sand bar if you can. I catch blues and Jacks this way. Also, Kings and Spanish run the beach at that time of year, and you can catch them on large spoons. In the pass, I use Shrimp (Dead and alive) and squid to catch pompano, reds, sheepshead, and blues. A good rig is an egg sinker above a swivel with a leader 2-3' long, fished on the bottom. Use a sinker large enough to get to the bottom, but small enough to drift with the current. If you want to fish for larger reds, I might suggest Fort Morgan point. Fish in the line where the bay waters meet the gulf waters (It forms a wake). I will be there in May and June also, look for a black and Gray boat named "Fish Tales" and give me a holler. If you want more specifics, check with the local bait shops, they are always willing to help.

I've fished a few times down there. Try fishing the Perdido pass. The last time I was there I hit it with the tide going out and was catching small fish using a cork and shrimp for bait near the rocks. I would then hook it on a larger rig (I found using a steel leader and no weights worked best) and throw them out. I never was able to land anything, first fish bit the head off, second bit the tail (hooked on the other end of course and I had a weight) then I used two hooks and swivel got straitened out. Then I fly lined it and hooked one, fought it about ten minutes and then tried to horse him and, snap. I'm guessing it was a king mackerel. The kings, Spanish and reds do good this year. Good luck.

squid, mullett, shrimp seem to be the most common baits that i have seen people use as well as myself.
i have caught reef sharks, big bull reds, and alot of other smaller fish, such as trout and whitings.the whiteings are pretty good fighters as far as size go and if u catch enough of them they make a decent meal.
also if u are their at the time they are running u can catch spanish mackeral.they are really good to eat also.although i think they run in the spring.
well good luck to u.

You might be able to get king mackeral, if they are running.
Sharks are always fun but they scare the tourists!
