A laceration is a cut...and the length it "lasts" depends on how bad the cut is.

For instance, if you get a small paper cut...this is a small laceration that might bleed for a few minutes and heal up in a few days.

Or, you might cut your neck in a car accident...deep into your carotid artery...this is a deep/big laceration that could cause you to bleed to death within minutes (i.e. never heal on its own).

When speaking about internal organs, such as the liver...the same principles apply. If it were a BIG laceration, the bleed would continue until the person lost so much blood in the abdomen that would bleed to death internally. But this is NOT the case with your friend's son. If it were, the doctors at the hospital would have seen this on the CT scan...noticed it on abdominal exam...and his vital signs would have shown it (low blood pressure, fast heart rate) - and they would have taken him to surgery immediately!

So it sounds as if it was a small cut to the liver...and is already "hemostatic"...i.e. no longer bleeding...and will be fine.

I hope this helped at least some...
