I have to admit that some of the PE teachers that I know would definitely struggle teaching a real subject.

Yes. Teachers realize that P.E. is the least scholastically demanding of the teaching endeavors as little more is required than being pyshically fit, willing and able. True, these criteria can be in and of themselves a formidable hurdle. Yet once overcome the rewards are abundantly clear. The foregoing is more than just opinion. In speaking with a friend and teacher just a day ago, he made it clear that after many years of teaching he was ready to make the next step: teach P.E. Keep in mind, this is in no way a condemnation of a teacher's ability, just a simple reality. The rigors of teachers' meetings, classroom protocol, lesson plans, testing and homework administration are a yeoman's task to be sure. Moving from classroom teaching to teaching P.E. seems a welcome transitional step. Not an absolute by any means. Simply an understandable choice.

Yes!! P.e is not academic and therefore a P.E teacher could not teach a maths or english lesson. Unless of course they choose P.E purely because they enjoy it but they are still academic and have qualifications in core subjects.

is that not a contradiction..u obviously can teach if ur teaching p.e...:-) to be a qualified p.e. teacher the course u do is the same length as u would do to teach any other subject..and in primary school not only do u teach p.e. but u teach all the other subjects as well..so,for me personally, its not true
most teachers can do and teach..but not all..;-)

Close, but you need the last line. "If you can't teach PE, you administrate the teachers."

Is that saying still going? Believe me, those who can teach are bloody saints. I'm giving up on that particular profession, but I take off my hat to anyone who can hack it!

...if you can't teach p.e become an ofsted inspector. Well teaching children to play sports is not as challenging as maths.
