Atomic Shuttles have a coach leaving at 3pm, but that's from the centre of town - however, you might be able to make it, as Christchurch isn't that big!

Intercity would be a better bet, leaving Christchurch at 4pm.

The train won't be an option, as the only one of the day leaves at 7am - shame, as it's a lovely journey.

Driving is the only other option, but that really isn't a great idea if you're stepping off a flight, especially if it's a long one. Plus you won't be able to see the beautiful scenery if you're driving!

Yes, it's possible although it could be tiresome if you're just off a plane.

From Christchurch to Picton:
5 hrs by car
5.5 hrs by bus (intercitycoach has a bus directly from the
airport but you'll have the check the website for more info)

Plan for a day in Chch if you are thinking of going by train. The Transscenic departs 0700.

You want the Tran scenic, NOT the Transalpine, as that will take you across to the west coast.( which is not where you want to go), but it is a wonderful trip, if you have the time, and is well worth the effort

If driving you should get through to Picton in about 5-6 hours depending on traffic and road conditions.
Parts are excellent to travel at 100kph, whilst others are considerable slower.

If going by bus and you intend to take a ferry to the North Island, most will arrive at a time to suit the sailing

It will be a very, very late night for you if you are driving. Not sure when the train leaves look up:
