First, JJ (above) knows absolutely NOTHING about cigars...

Cuban cigars are over-rated...everyone wants something you can't get, and cuban cigars are illegal in the US do do the Embargo on Cuba...85% of cuban cigars in the WORLD are conterfeit. Cuba could not possbilly even produce all of the cigars that clain to be cuban...Cuba is producing a sub-par cigar at best...they do not fertilize their fields properly, cure their tobacco properly, and age their cigars long enough...Castro has killed the cuban cigar market. FYI the cigars that good 'ol JJ refers to are made in the dominican republic.

Now, to anser your questions:
Their are basically 2 types of cigars:
Long Filler and Short Fill....

Short fill cigars are made by machine and use cigarette type tobacco for filler, it is small shavings of the leaf..Philles, Dutch Masters, Black and Mild, White Owl...are all examples of short fill cigars...they are not good cigars in my opinion.

Long Filler Cigars are hand made and rolled from individual tobacco leaves on average about 5 leaves. (thicker guage cigars/thinner guage cigars will use more/less respectively)

A long filler cigar is made up of 3 parts:
Wrapper
Binder
Filler

The wrapper is the final leaf on the cigar. It is a very thin and usually flawless looking leaf that typically gives the cigar 60-80% of it's flavor

The Binder is the leaf that holds the filler together and is usually a volado leaf...volado is primarily used for burning and bridges the wrapper to the filler, but generally has little flavor.

The Filler is made up of several different leaves, and is different from cigar to cigar..
A milder cigar will have seco and volado in the filler...seco is a milder flavor tobacco leaf coming from the middle of the tobacco plant.
A more flavorfull or full body cigar will have blends of Seco and Ligero...Ligero is from the very top of the plant and gets all of the sun and weather and is usually a very veiny and dark leaf and holds the strongest flavor.

The tobacco plant is made up of 3 parts:
Ligero (top of the plant)
Seco (middle of plant-or second-seco)
Volado (bottom of plant)

Now, cigar smoking...cigar smoking is very different than cigarette smoking, as for one you do not inhale but rather draw the smoke into your mouth and enjoy it's flavor on your tounge. To fully enjoy or experience the flavor of a cigar one should blow the smoke out of the nostrils rather than the mouth. You nose can sense hundreds of flavors whereas your tounge can only sense 4 (sweet, salt, sour, bitter) NOTE: blowing smoke through the nostrils can burn and make your eyes water...it is not recommended for novice smokers

Characteristics that you look for in a cigar are the burn of the cigar; did it burn evenly, the ash; is it white and firm, and just the overall flavor of the cigar

As far as brands are concerned, I recommend you ask your local tobacconist as they are usually very good about getting their customers the best cigar for their needs, but if I had to recommend brands I would look for a cigar from a company that grows it's own tobacco, cures it's own tobacco and rolls it's own cigars...only 1% of brands fall under this criteria and below are a few who do:

Oliva, Fuente, Torano, Camacho, Padron, Perdomo

The other 99% buy their tobacco and in some cases buy their cigars pre-rolled banded and boxed. Which for me raises questions about quality and consistency.

well, I hope I answered your question.

Cigar smoking is bad for you, but then again so is breathing the "air" and drinking the "water". The best cigars are Cuban cigars. They are the only ones that are still hand rolled. Don't inhale the cigar that will make you sick. The Cohiba is considered the best cigar, but preference differs. I would take any "cheap"Cuban cigar over the 'best" of any other. One of the best for the price is a nice Romeo Y Julieta No. 1. A nice Cuban cigar, for only a couple of dollars.

Information "on" cigars or "about" cigars? How 'bout this...
(1) Huff & pull on about ten every day for two weeks
(2) Don't brush your teeth
(3) Don't use any mouth wash
(4) Don't change clothes-allow the smell to stay
(5) Go to Hooters and ask out any foxy chick there. Be sure to breath in her face. It might help if you inhale a big drag an blow it in her face as you're asking for a date. I think she can give you more information about cigars than I.

Good luck doin' that!
